Entrevista con Ayam (Río de Janeiro)

Un día nos llegó un mensaje vía myspace desde Río de Janeiro. El remitente: un grupo llamado Ayam. En respuesta a su interés enviamos un cuestionario, algo que no habíamos hecho hasta ahora por lo impersonal de la forma, pero que al final se ha convertido en la primera publicacion bilingüe del blog (y avisamos de que no será la última!).

Cruzamos el charco gracias a la música y Gustavo, guitarrista y fundador de la banda nos cuenta esto desde Brasil:



First contact with music.

My first contact with music was through my grandfather Osvaldo. He was a piano tuner in our city, Sao Gonçalo, district of Rio de Janeiro. My father is rock fan so I grew up listening to the best of classic rock, progressive and psychedelic music.

Mi primer contacto con la música fu a través de mi abuelo Osvaldo. Era teclista en nuestra ciudad, Sao Gonçalo, un distrito de Río de Janeiro. Mi padre es fan del rock así que crecí escuchando lo mejor del rock clásico, progresivo y psicodélico.

How did you meet, and which are the origins of Ayam?

When I was a teenager, I started to enjoy bands that were successful at the time as Nirvana, Alice in chains and at 12 years of age, I began to study guitar with local teachers. When I started to play the guitar, I got to know bands that were more virtuous such as Iron Maiden, Angra, Sepultura, X-Japan, when my interest in playing heavy metal grew. I studied at Villa-Lobos Music School which is very prestigious in Rio de Janeiro where I polished up classical piano, an instrument that opened my range of options to compose. I can only talk for myself but I believe the history of many bands is very similar.

I got a great desire to expand the technique on the guitar and other instruments that I play, I always being a composer and as how I listened to heavy metal from back in the days, I always wanted to start a band that made a similar sound. The call for members of the band began in 2002, and had several tests with various musicians until the formation of that stabilized today with Thiago Frasão (vocals), Gustavo Marinho (Guitar), Lucas Brum (Guitar), Diego Damasceno (Bass) and Felipe Damasceno (Drums).

Cuando era un adolescente, me empezaron a gustar grupos que tenían éxito en ese momento como Nirvana, Alice in Chains… y a los 12 años, empecé a estudiar guitarra con profesores locales. Cuando empecé a tocar la guitarra conocí grupos más virtuosos como Iron Maiden, Angra, Sepultura, X-Japan… fue cuando creció mi interés por tocar heavy metal. Estudié en la Escuela Musical Villalobos que es muy prestigiosa en Río de Janeiro, donde perfeccioné el piano clásico, un instrumento que me abrió más opciones para componer. Sólo puedo hablar por mí pero creo que la historia de muchas bandas es muy parecida.

Deseaba aumentar mi técnica en guitarra y los otros instrumentos que toco, siempre he sido compositor y desde que escuchaba heavy metal siempre quise formar un grupo con un sonido similar. En 2002 empecé a buscar miembros para la banda y después de difíciles pruebas con varios músicos, conseguimos la formación actual: Thiago Frasão (voz), Gustavo Marinho (guitarra), Lucas Brum (guitarra), Diego Damasceno (bajo) y Felipe Damasceno (batería).

Why did you choose that name for the band?

The name Ayam came by chance. I was in my home’s office when I found an old book from my mother which was about an alchemist named Saint German, and he came up with this concept of "Ayam", which has God in all forms of life or what is bright inside every living being. So I found the name appealing.

El nombre Ayam llegó por casualidad. Estaba en mi casa y encontré un libro antiguo de mi madre que iba sobre un alquimista llamado Saint German, para quien el concepto de Ayam, era la existencia de Dios en todas las formas de vida o lo que brilla dentro de cada ser vivo. Así que encontramos el nombre apropiado.

What are your expectations with this adventure?

We always expect the best from all the work done with love and dedication. We all have parallel lives to the music so we end up rehearsing until midnight to 3:00 am in the morning, as we only have this time. And hopefully, many good things have been happening to the band such as opening shows for big bands as we did last year for Angra, here in our city.

Nosotros siempre esperamos lo mejor de todo trabajo hecho con amor y dedicación. Todos tenemos vidas paralelas a la música así que acabamos ensayando desde la medianoche hasta las 3.00 de la mañana, porque sólo disponemos de ese tiempo. Afortunadamente, están pasando muchas cosas buenas para el grupo como telonear bolos de bandas grandes como el año pasado con Angra, aquí en nuestra ciudad.

What can we find in your work?

People can find influences of all styles of rock in our music. I had three bands that were essential to my training ideas of alternative rock and metal and j-rock so you can find in our music simple and modern arrangements with complex structures.

La gente puede encontrar influencias de todos los estilos del rock en nuestra música. Estuve en otras tres bandas que han sido esenciales para practicar las ideas del rock alternativo, metal y j-rock, así que podéis encontrar arreglos simples y modernos con complejas estructuras.

Is difficult to organize a live concert in Rio?

Yes, definitely. As our city Rio de Janeiro is considered the land of Samba, we count with few Rock venues to perform concerts, despite having many fans of rock and metal, unlike the city of Sao Paulo which is the rockers' paradise of Brazil.

Sí, definitivamente. Como nuestra ciudad, Río de Janeiro, está considerada la tierra de la samba, contamos con pocos sitios donde montar conciertos, a pesar de haber muchos fans del rock y el metal, nada que ver con Sao Paulo, el paraíso rockero de Brasil.

What are you doing now: recording, thinking in new songs, making a tour...?

We are in pre production on our first album which will feature a world-renowned producer that soon we will be able to speak the name because we are still in negotiation. The CD will have 10 songs and will certainly be a big surprise to the rock fans.

At the moment we are focused on how to record our first album, so we haven’t been out much lately except for Lucas who has his core metal band called "Frente Imperial" which has been playing a lot at Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.

Estamos en la pre-producción de nuestro primer album, que contará con la colaboración de un productor de renombre mundial cuyo nombre no podemos revelar por ncontrarnos aún en negociaciones. El CD tendrá 10 temas y seguro que será una gran sorpresa para los seguidores del rock.

De momento estamos concentrados en la grabación, así que no hemos actuado mucho últimamente, excepto Lucas que tiene un grupo de metal-core llamado ‘Frente Imperial’ con el que ha estado tocando mucho en Río de Janeiro y Sao Paulo.

What are the last concerts that you have seen as fan?

The last concert I remember to have seen with other band members (Thiago and Felipe) was the Guns n Roses concert here in Rio de Janeiro and I hope to see the concert of As I Lay Dying, Ozzy Osbourne, Avanged Sevenfold, that will happen here in Rio this year and it is also clear that the Rock in Rio will be the big event of the year here in Brazil so we plan to see that as well.

El último que recuerdo haber visto con otros miembros del grupo (Thiago y Felipe) fue el concierto de Guns n Roses aquí en Río de Janeiro, y espero ver a As I Lay Dying, Ozzy Osbourne, Avanged Sevenfold que vendrán este año a Río, y por supuesto, el Rock in Rio es claramente el acontecimiento de rock más grande de Brasil, así que planeamos ir también.

What are your music idols?

My idols are people who are contrasting because I have an eclectic taste with different styles of music. One person that I've always liked was Kurt Cobain, who blew my mind with his attitude. Still as a teenager I also enjoyed listening to Kiko Loureiro and Rafael Bittencourt guitars. They are great references to Brazilian guitar players. I find very appealing the style of Japanese guitar players such as Sugizo from Luna Sea, Daita from Siam Shade among others that always show creativity.

Mis ídolos son gente muy dispar porque tengo un gusto ecléctico de diferentes estilos de música. Alguien que siempre me ha gustado es Kurt Cobain, cuya actitud me cambió la forma de pensar. Aunque de adolescente también disfruté escuchando a los guitarristas Kiko Loureiro y Rafael Bittencourt. Ellos son grandes referencias para los guitarristas brasileños. Me parece interesante el rollo de guitarristas japoneses como Sugizo de Luna Sea o Daita de Siam Shade, que siempre demuestran tener creatividad.

Have you got next projects for the band?

After recording our album we plan to go on a world tour to promote that and we can’t wait to play Europe, especially in Spain where is known by many bands as a very passionate and energetic country.

Después de grabar planeamos hacer una gira mundial para promocionar nuestro primer disco y no podemos esperar para tocar en Europa, especialmente en España, que según muchas bandas es un país enérgico y apasionado.
